We Rented a Cabin in the Woods. What Happened That Night Still Gives Me Chills.

Last year, my wife and I rented a remote cabin for a long weekend. We both work high-stress jobs and needed a break. A friend recommended a quiet place deep in the woods, about 90 minutes from the nearest town. No internet. No neighbors. Just trees and silence.

It was exactly what we wanted.

The first night went fine — we played cards, listened to music, and watched the stars. But around 2:30 AM, I woke up to my wife crying softly.

She told me she’d had a dream where something was standing just outside the cabin, watching us. It wasn’t human — she couldn’t describe it exactly, just that it felt wrong. In the dream, it was already inside. Right in the corner of the bedroom, watching us sleep.

She said it whispered her name.

I tried to calm her down, but I’ll be honest — I felt it too. That wrong feeling. Like we weren’t alone. The air felt heavier than it should. The wind outside didn’t sound like wind.

I told her we should go for a drive. Just to shake it off.

We left everything — blankets still on the bed, phones charging, mugs on the counter. I didn’t even lock the door. I just had this overwhelming get out now urge.

The farther we drove, the better we felt. That weight on our chests? Gone. We found a 24-hour diner with fluorescent lights and cheap coffee and stayed parked there until morning.

When we returned, the road was blocked with police tape.

The cabin next to ours — barely 200 feet away — had been broken into. The couple renting it hadn’t left like we did. One of them was found tied up. The other one didn’t survive.

There were no signs of forced entry. Police said it looked like whoever did it may have been watching the cabins for a while — learning who stayed when, how long they’d be there, if they were alone.

We asked about cameras. There were none.

We never went back. My wife still has dreams about that cabin. And sometimes I wonder… if we had stayed one more hour, would we have heard someone at the door? Or worse — would we never have heard them at all?

🧊 I don’t know what saved us that night — intuition, a nightmare, or something else entirely.
But if your gut tells you to leave…
Leave.
